The one icon that has become synonymous with the American dream is that thick green carpet you call your lawn. What was once only owned by people of wealth and prestige, is now owned by the average American family. Today I will be talking about one of the most important things you can do to your lawn.
Your Lawn is like a Sports Car
One way to increase the power of a sports car is through maximizing airflow. With the use of performance air intakes and exhaust, you can greatly increase the efficiency of the engine. Your lawn works the same way--maximizing airflow maximizes efficiency. We improve the airflow in your lawn through a practice called aeration.
Aeration. What is it, and What are the Benefits?
Aeration is the process of improving airflow to the root system of your lawn. There are two major types of aeration: spike aeration and core aeration. Spike aeration has no measurable impact on your lawns health, and in some cases it can actually negatively impact your lawn's health. On the other hand, core aeration (the only kind that we offer at Lawns By Cam) is very beneficial to your lawn's health. Core aeration is achieved by running a machine over your yard that pulls cores out, and leaves little holes behind. These cores are then left to sit on top of your lawn and break down. When the cores break down, they help feed the beneficial microbes in your soil. The benefits of core aeration include:
- Reduction of soil compaction - Increased water uptake - Increased nutrient uptake - Reduction of thatch Since core aeration helps a plant receive more nutrients, it is extremely beneficial to fertilize immediately after aerating. DIY vs. Hiring a Pro
The machines used to core aerate lawns can weigh hundreds of pounds, and are difficult to handle. Additionally, the rental cost for these machines is around what a professional would charge for an average sized lawn. Add in the time it takes to pick up the machine, aerate your lawn, and drop the machine back off, and most of the time a professional will be cheaper to hire. For this reason, many homeowners end up having a professional perform the job.
